Things went horribly wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the debris and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible.
